Project Description
This Queensland backyard suite project began with our clients looking for a max-sized suite with architecturally appealing design inside and out. They were also looking for a certain set of upgrades to make the suite more functional for a wide range of uses.
Based off the ‘Xavier’ standard plan, we increased the size of both the garage envelope and the living space within this Queensland garage suite. A self-collecting rainwater system, solar panels and other green methods were explored during the design phase.
Various changes and upgrades our client decided upon during our design consultations include (but not limited to):
- +30 square feet to the garage for extra storage
- +74 square feet to the suite living space
- added a third-car garage
- floor-plan was rearranged completely
- Soaker tub and glass shower with partition
- Custom MDF shelving
- Office/bedroom with installed Murphy bed
The large lot allowed our client to undergo permit relaxation with the city to obtain more than the ~850 square feet of allowable living space for this project.

Queensland is an established community in South Calgary. Found just a few minutes southeast of Southcentre Mall, the neighbourhood is home to mostly detached single-family homes with larger-than-life lots that are ideal for backyard suite projects.
Queensland residents enjoy direct access to Fish Creek Provincial Park – one of the largest urban parks in North America. The Bow River meanders through the park from north to south, while interconnecting pathways provide access to Sikome Lake and other park features.
Because of everything that Queensland has to offer, many residents stay in the community over the long-term. In some cases, homes are passed down through the generations, with families choose to enjoy multi-generational living. Backyard suites are an ideal way to provide elderly family members with more privacy while staying in the community they’ve grown to love.
Queensland is very close to countless amenities at Southcentre Mall, Macleod Trail and other major resources where you’ll find all the restaurants, shops and services you could hope for. Department stores like Home Depot and RONA are also not too far off, making life as convenient as it gets for homeowners.
Our current Queensland backyard sits on a large corner lot with lots of room to go around. The owners have requested special environmentally focussed design features to reduce the suite’s overall environmental footprint.
