Project Description

Our first carriage house project in Dalhousie is a standard spec build, utilizing most of Garage Suites’ standard specifications inside and out. Starting out with a one bedroom + den floor plan package with ~675 square feet of interior living space, the project’s floor plan was altered to suit our clients’ needs, but was changed very little from the original design.

Entering the suite from an exterior stair that provides both yard and alley access, you walk into an interior stairway that has double-door security access to the garage and to the unit above. Walking up the stairs, you enter the main living area with a storage/coat closet on your right at the top of the stairs, and the doorway to the small den on the right. The living room is on your left, where you’ll find the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom.

The kitchen features a peninsula style countertop and many white standard finishes, a timeless colour that stands the test of time. The build utilizes vaulted ceilings and large picture windows facing the alley to provide a more spacious, naturally lit, comfy ambiance.

Dalhousie is a sought-after inner city community in Calgary’s northwest known for its varying elevations and large lots. The size of Dalhousie properties make them ideal for backyard suites, however, the varying elevations sometimes mean a high concrete requirement for retaining walls. In this particular project, there was a significant upcharge for the retaining wall required to encase the ground-level of the suite because the yard was more than eight feet higher than the alley.
